Since the 18th century, Holy Week has been celebrated in Frigiliana (Málaga). Adorned in their traditional pharaonic-style robes with long trains sliding along the cobblestone streets, on Holy Thursday night, the penitents snake through the procession. Some guard, while others carry images of Christ of the Reed, Jesus of Nazareth, and the Virgin of Sorrows. They dimly light the winding and steep streets of the Moorish village with their candles, casting shadows on the whitewashed walls. Among them are those dressed in garments, their faces covered with ancient masks of mournful expression, evoking the figures of the apostles.
